Whether we slide a credit card through the little machine with the number buttons or we slide a garrote through a block of clay, we are always wanting to make things ours, to look out on the world around us, to appropriate it for our own use, to make it last a little longer, and to declare it good. Corollary rule: even the most noble, artistic pursuits are tinged with avarice.
